Cities and Municipalities in Nayarit, Mexico

Bucerias

Small and lovely, Bucerias (pronounced Boo-sir-e-us) still has all of the conveniences required for a vacation or visit to the Riviera Nayarit. This area includes all the amenities needed for a casual, yet quality coastal visit - fresh seafood, restaurants, golf, services, laundry service, doctors and most importantly beaches - all located in or near Bucerias on the beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Bucerias, which means "place of divers," is only 10 miles from the Puerto Vallarta airport and about 15 miles from Sayulita and Punta Mita. Quiet, relaxed and a less expensive alternative to larger cities it is a charming spot and becoming very popular for Nayarit real estate as well as for a vacation destination. If you stay in Bucerias, Puerto Vallarta is only ten miles away which makes it very convenient to get resort-style sophistication while enjoying the relaxed, casual atmosphere of Bucerias. The area to the north of Bucerias, near the city of Sayulita, is home to several luxury communities including Punta Sayulita. The road to Sayulita from Bucerias takes you through the city of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle which has a marina, called Marina Riviera, capable of handling vessels of all sizes up to 400 feet in length.

Bahía de Banderas

Bahía de Banderas (Bay of Flags) is both a bay and a municipality in the Mexican state of Nayarit. The city of Bucerias lies on the bay as does Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta.

The bay is bounded on the north by Punta Mita and the south by Cape Corrientes. It straddles the states of Jalisco and Nayarit and is the third largest natural bay in Mexico. The municipal seat is Valle de Banderas (east and slightly north of Bucerias) with a population of 5,057 in 2005. Other towns are San Juan de Abajo (8,159), Bucerias (5,711), San José del Valle (5,188), San Vicente (3,543) and Jarretaderas (3,426).

Tourism is very important and Bahía de Banderas is the most important site of touristic development in the state. With a coastline of 68 kilometers, Bahía de Banderas has attractive beaches and landscapes that have spurred development in the tourist sector including the city of Bucerias. The long valley and abundance of water allow for extensive cattle raising. The mountains constitute an important ecological reserve. Banderas Bay is also an important breeding and birthing ground for the Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).
